If you plan on using a USB memory stick or hard drive with both a Mac and PC, you must first format it into the Windows-based Fat 32 file format.
[IMPORTANT: The USB memory stick or hard drive MUST be empty before you format it. The formatting process will erase everything.]
Formatting USB Drive for Mac and PC on a PC1. Insert the USB drive into a USB port on the PC. Click on "Start," "My Computer" and locate the icon of the USB drive under "Devices with Removable Storage."
2. Right-click on the icon of the USB drive and select "Format" from the drop-down menu.
3. Select "Fat32" from the drop-down menu that is below the "File System" tab in the new window that appears.
4. Click on the "START" button at the bottom of the window. Click "OK" on the "Format" window that appears. "Click on the "Format Complete" window that appears.
5. Right-click on the USB drive and select "Eject." Your USB is now formatted for use on Macs and PCs.
